This book, I can’t decide if I liked it or if it was pedestrian.

I read this book, Unmissing: A Thriller by Minka Kent, with my Kindle Unlimited subscription. You can check out their catalog here and get a free trial and pay less per month for multiple books than you would typically pay for one book.
Summary of the Book
A woman, Lydia, goes missing for 9 years, and her husband, Luca, has remarried to a much fancier woman named Merritt and they have 2 children and own restaurants and live the high life.
Lydia escapes and goes back to find Luca, and ends up becoming somewhat of friends with Merritt, who is bewildered by her return and what this means for her marriage.
Then you find out what happened the day she went missing (not a spoiler alert, she was kidnapped) and how she plans to bring justice to her kidnapper.
What I Liked About Unmissing
The twists. I will say, this is not your typical ‘woman has been abducted and fights back against the odds to escape her captor’ story.
I would say there are two twists, which, were somewhat turning points of the story. One twist is a little bit further than halfway through and the other about 80%.
Both twists were moments were I was like, ‘wow, that is effed up.’
The ending is satisfying, though generally what I expected as an avid reader of suspense books, even before I knew the twists. But, books always have to have a climax, right? So yeah.
How I Felt the Book Could’ve Been Improved
While this was fairly easy reading to get through, I felt like a lot of time was wasted on character monologue of thoughts.
It was somewhat boring, some of the background.
You don’t learn what happened in totality at one point, but it unfolds, so that was nice.
But some of the details, I was just kinda like, get to the story and tell me who abducted her already.
I don’t need to know about failing restaurants and her clothes, though the restaurant part goes to character development.
I may be too harsh because I know that authors have to build in a story line around the main points, and this one did just that, but I was fairly bored.
The twists, they were interesting but once I found out about them, I don’t know, it seemed like it was without much fanfare.
As though they were just fact, another detail in the story, and no one had ever batted an eyelash.
I can’t say more without divulging spoilers.
Would I Recommend This Book?
If you want something easy to get through suspense novel with not a lot of sexual scenes, cursing, and a couple of quick ‘WTF’ moments, yes.
It was also nice that this book came with a free audio version so that I could listen to it while making my sourdough.
(That was helpful and got me through the book faster, though I generally read faster than the audio version, so I speed it up in the speed settings and swipe to progress the page if I was able to read ahead it as it went along.)
But generally, I would say, read the summary of the story here, go to the chapter that has 63% in it, then 80%, then read from there and you haven’t missed a whole lot.
If you’ve ever read ‘woman abducted’ books, it’s similar to the rest, maybe a more abusive abductor here, but standard abduction and escape story.
I gave it a 4 Stars rating on Amazon.
